The consistent growth in the level of investment in research and development on the part of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and national governments is the primary driver behind Genstar Capital’s investment thesis in the life sciences. We are looking to invest in businesses that provide products and services used in all aspects of basic life science research, pharmaceutical discovery and drug development activities. Consistent with Genstar’s LBO-style investment philosophy, we are not looking for companies that are pursuing high-risk strategies such as developing products requiring regulatory approval. Genstar’s investments in NEN Life Sciences, Inc. (now part of PerkinElmer, Inc., NYSE:PKI), BioSource International, Inc. (acquired by Invitrogen October 2005 NASDAQ:IVGN), PRA International, Inc. and Harlan Sprague Dawley, Inc. are representative of our focus on the life sciences.

Genstar Capital believes that U.S. spending on health care will continue to rise for the foreseeable future due to demographic trends, political pressures, and medical advances, making it an attractive area for investment. We are looking to invest in businesses that deliver services that focus on health and wellness, care away from hospitals and services that capitalize on an aging demographic. Genstar’s investments in Axia Health Management LLC, OnCURE Medical Corporation and Catalent Pharma Solutions are representative of our focus in the healthcare services sector.
